Description
The Bedrock Literacy Curriculum was designed to support teachers of Deaf and hard of hearing children in building the foundations of literacy. Grounded in a commitment to sharing effective instructional strategies for children with varying language backgrounds, the Bedrock Literacy Curriculum recognizes the demand for applied, practical tools that teachers have always sought-- particularly for those students who require a visually based approach to literacy development.

DHH students who do not use English phonology as a means for becoming literate are often expected to develop skills without effective strategies. The Bedrock manual outlines foundational building blocks (e.g. vocabulary building, reading comprehension, independent writing, spelling, etc.) for these students to ensure that concepts are comprehensible and literacy activities are interesting, motivating and internalized. This manual is intended for beginning students (ages 5-8). However, rather than grade levels, the design uses a developmental approach drawing on cognitive principles all humans use to become literate. Thus students who are older but new to accessible language and/or school will find this scaffolding particularly helpful.
